A caterpillar hatches. It eats and eats, grows and grows. Then it rests as a pupa that transforms into an adult that flits and floats across the sky. Follow the life cycle of one of nature’s most beautiful creatures in simple text and stunning photos. This unique book features graduated flaps that display each stage of metamorphosis at a glance.
Research Notes
“I’ve written several books about butterflies, but I was excited to create a highly interactive book for very young readers.

I began by pulling out all the monarch photos and notebook entries I’ve compiled over the years and reviewing them. I tried to put myself in the shoes of a 3 or 4 year old child as I thought about a simple, tactile way to share the wonders of metamorphosis.

I discussed my ideas with the editors and designers at Sterling Publishing, and by working together, we came up with a cool design and format that I think kids will really love.”
